Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such medications should be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural management.
